Edge of Control

Edge of Control artwork of a climber suspended beneath a rock overhang

My second image called, "Edge of Control", is also taken from the SEM imagery of Jamaican Rooibos tea leaves. The microscopic textures are similar to steep cliffs and rugged terrain, which inspired the addition of a lone climber suspended beneath an overhang. With the climber sourcing from online and the image from online but painted over and edited.

This composition was purposely exaggerated to emphasize vulnerability. The climber, supported only by his trusty rope, symbolizes both fear and hope (knowing that he can make it to the top but is unprepared for any shortcoming that could arise). This image reflects the psychological weight of challenges that can feel overwhelming, even when they originate from something small.

By the tea leaf being symbolized into a towering rock face, I highlight the contrast between perception and reality. What appears insignificant at one scale can become immense at another. The piece suggests that resilience is not the absence of fear, but the decision to continue despite it.

Source Materials: Scanning Electron Microscope (SEM) images of Jamaican Rooibos tea leaves, digitally altered and combined, an online image of a rock climber, and an online image of a tropical island background with island and ocean.
